Aim of the study: This research paper aims to explore the role of social media in advancing environmental health and awareness in Bangladesh, a country highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Objective: This study examines the role of social media in promoting environmental health and awareness in Bangladesh, a country highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Methods: A multi-level, multi-methods approach was used to analyze the relationship between social media and environmental movements in Bangladesh. The study focused on a recent protest against the Rampal Power Plant project, which was planned near the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Findings: The findings suggest that social networking sites played a crucial role in every stage of the environmental movement, from raising awareness to mobilizing public support and influencing policymakers (Sharma, 2014). Social media platforms allowed activists to frame environmental issues in emotionally compelling ways, fostering stronger pro-environmental convictions and behavioral intentions among the public. (Sanford et al., 2023)
Practical Insight: The study highlights the potential of social media to catalyze environmental activism and promote sustainable development in Bangladesh and other developing countries facing the challenges of climate change.
Originality/value: This research provides new insights into the intersection of social media, environmental health, and public engagement in the context of a developing country like Bangladesh, which is at the forefront of the climate change crisis.
