ABSTRACT

Legal rights related to reproduction and reproductive health is called as reproductive health rights. Reproductive rights are the right to legal or safe abortion-the right to birth control-from coerced sterilization, abortion, and contraception-the right to access good-quality reproductive healthcare; and the right to education and access in order to make free and informed reproductive choices. The present study is carried in three districts of Western Maharashtra vizSangali, Satar and Pune. The objectives of the present study are to understand socio-economic characteristics of urban and rural women, to assess awareness about reproductive rights among rural and urban women and to know the gender discrimination faced by the women while they exercise their reproductive rights. Total 600 married women in the age of 18-45 are selected for the present study. Opinions of women from urban including slum and rural about reproductive rights in concern with safe sexual relationships, menstruation, pregnancy, miscarriage, abortion and delivery and family planning had taken for the present study. Research had also used the indicators such as rights to spend money for health, availability and use health care facilities, accompanying person with hospital, use of family planning, health care facilities at pregnancy, decision to spend money for health care, place of pregnancy are taken for study. The study concluded that urban women are more privileged and in many cases of reproductive rights from rural areas women are dependent either on spouses or in- laws. So gender discrimination should be addressed and women should allow exercising their rights. It is also necessary to create the awareness among males about the reproductive health and rights of women.
